This guide supports the teaching of New Sands, New School, the first notebook in the Tales of an Expat Kid series. The book is journal fiction. Tas Arden, age 8, writes end- of-day entries about leaving Arlington for Abu Dhabi. The same Tas, now 30, adds short reflections in italics.

The guide is built around five teaching commitments.

Skills come first. Each chapter teaches one craft skill students can name and try. Concrete detail. Dual voice. Objects as memory. Cultural detail without explanation. Setting as pressure. Themes appear, but they are earned through skill work, not lectured.

The book is the text. This guide does not summarise the chapters. Two or three sentences set the context. After that, the teacher reads the book with the students. The activities only work if everyone has read the page.

Sensitive students are protected. Tas leaves a home he loved. Many students have done the same, or fear doing it, or have lost a home they cannot return to. Every activity gives students a way in that does not require disclosure. No forced participation. No demand for personal stories.

Pacing is teacher-led. A two-week plan and a four-week plan are included. The two- week plan moves at reading pace. The four-week plan adds time for writing craft.

Worksheets sit behind the guide, not inside it. Eight printables are listed at the back. Each one supports one skill. Teachers download what they need.

This guide is short by design. The book carries the weight.
